Watchmen (Security) Manager

Position Summary
The Watchmen Manager is responsible for overseeing the security operations of Cheam First Nation. This role involves overseeing the Watchmen team, developing/evaluating security policies and procedures, reporting, as well as ensuring a safe and secure environment for community members, staff, visitors, and all Cheam Properties. The ideal candidate will have strong leadership skills, a solid understanding of security protocols, and a commitment to community engagement.

Who we are

The Cheam First Nation is a member of the Sto:lo Tribal Council. Our band is located in the Fraser Valley near the town of Chilliwack and approximately 100 kilometres east of Vancouver.

The Cheam people traditionally speak the Upriver dialect of Halkomelem, which is one of the Salishan family of languages.

Cheam First Nation has 580 registered members living on and off reserve. The Band is governed by a Chief and five Councillors, all of whom are elected by band members for a two-year term.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead, train, and supervise the security team, ensuring high standards of performance and professionalism.
  • Enforce Cheam laws and Land Code within the community and surrounding territories.
  • Develop and implement security policies and procedures to ensure the safety and security of Cheam First Nation properties and personnel.
  • Respond to security incidents, investigate violations, and prepare detailed reports for management.
  • Conduct regular risk assessments and security audits to identify potential vulnerabilities and implement necessary improvements.
  • Foster positive relationships with community members, encouraging open communication and collaboration.
  • Create and manage staff schedules to ensure adequate coverage and response capabilities at all times.
  • Maintain detailed logs of incidents and situations, providing regular reports to management.
  • Act as the first responder to a range of calls, from low to high-risk situations, including wildlife, fisheries, and medical emergencies.
  • Provide ongoing training and development opportunities for security staff to enhance skills and knowledge.
  • Develop and implement emergency response plans and conduct drills to ensure readiness for potential incidents.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant laws, regulations, and organizational policies related to security operations.
  • Assess the need for additional support and resources, managing a culturally sensitive and politically aware team environment.
  • Other duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience in security management or a related field.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of security systems, protocols, and best practices.
  • Ability to handle sensitive situations with professionalism and discretion.
  • Valid security guard license and relevant certifications (e.g., first aid, CPR).
  • Experience working within Indigenous communities is an asset.

Working Conditions

  • Must be available for various shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as required.
  • Must be available to provide support for team members as required while they are on shift.
  • May involve working in various outdoor environments and under different weather conditions.
