Position Summary
Xwchíyò:m (Cheam First Nation) is seeking a motivated and organized Education Assistant to support the delivery of culturally relevant education services for Cheam students at all levels, from primary to post-secondary. Working closely with the Education Manager, this role will support communication between students, families, schools, and service providers to ensure student success and well-being.
The ideal candidate will be passionate about Indigenous education, committed to maintaining confidentiality, and eager to help students and families navigate the educational system with confidence.
Duties and Responsibilities
• Participate in occasional visits to the schools in which the Band’s children are enrolled.
• Plan with education professionals and others to meet the needs of students.
• Maintain communications with post-secondary students.
• Assist in ensuring post-secondary students are aware of the services that are available to them.
• Assist in education information and guidance to assist students and parents in achieving a better understanding of the school system.
• Assist in Bookkeeping and records for all applications, including filing, updating on budgets and reports to administration as necessary.
• Maintain confidentiality with respect to work with clients and educational personnel.
• Participate in seminars, workshops, meetings and assist in various training programs to upgrade skills and knowledge relevant to the position.
• Participate in awards ceremonies.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
• High school diploma or equivalent (required); post-secondary education in education, Indigenous studies, administration, or related field is preferred.
• Experience working with Indigenous students or within an Indigenous community is an asset.
• Familiarity with the public school system and post-secondary pathways.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build trust and rapport with students, families, and school staff.
• Organized and detail-oriented with proficiency in basic office software (e.g., Word, Excel, email).
• Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion and maintain strict confidentiality.
• A commitment to ongoing learning and participation in professional development.
• Able to work independently and have the initiative to assist in the development of programs.
• Valid B.C Driver’s license and own transportation.
