Santana McKay

Pulpit rock

Charmaine McKay and late Sidney Jr. Douglas are the proud parents of Santana Ray James McKay, born on December 25, 1997. Santana also has a proud and supportive family circle: stepdad, Alvin Jr. Jimmie, grandparents; Sidney Sr. /Judy Douglas; Jim/Laverne McKay and Nick/Louise Kaarsemaker.  Santana has been given a few nicknames such as: Santa, Phat Boy and Mantana, but his baseball teammates call him Carlos Santana.

Santana was inspired at a very young age by his mother, Charmaine, and Uncle Matthew who spent their days playing baseball with Santana. They never once treated Santana as a child and they taught him all the ins and outs of the game, through these teachings and practices Santana developed his love for baseball.

In 2004,  Santana was enrolled in the Chilliwack Minor Fast Pitch League. In 2009, Santana tried out for a Chilliwack Rep-Team called the “Vipers” and was successful. There were over 20 players who tried out for a position on the “Vipers team” and only one was chosen, Santana.

The Chilliwack Vipers have been together for 6 years and in the last 3 years the Vipers have won 8 - gold, 1 - silver and 2 - bronze. The team travels to many different districts like Victoria, Calgary, Cloverdale, Langford and Strathmore. During the season they play all across the lower mainland some being Chilliwack, Surrey, Richmond and Mission.  Santana has a very easy going personality and is willing to play any position the coaches require him to play, but his favorite position is back catcher.

Santana has been a “B” Honor student since grade school. He is not only a great baseball player, but he enjoys and excels at other sports like basketball, soccer, street hockey and cross country. Santana also enjoys playing the drums for the school band.

This coming year, Santana will be attending Sardis Secondary School for the Baseball Academy Program. There, Santana will be participating in a strict training regime for 6 months out of the year, for the next three years. Santana’s main goal in life is to be a “professional baseball player” and play the drums for a band. With his drive, desire and for the love of the game, I know without a shadow of a doubt Santana will make his dreams come true. He shows his dedication on and off the field by studying everything there is to know about the game and if you ask him about baseball he will talk for hours.
